Caminito Del Rey

The Caminito del Rey (The King's Pathway) is one of the most famous gorge walks in the world.  It was built originally between 1901 and 1905 as an access route for workers creating a hydro electric generating system.  The whole route is just over 7km, with approx. 3km of walkways pinned to the sides of the gorge some 100m over the river below. Originally just a simple concrete platform with an iron railing in parts, it was officially opened it in 1920 by King Alfonso XIII walking it's length.  After its official use was over, the path slowly fell into disrepair and having earned the accolade of being the most dangerous pathway in the world, was closed in 2000 after several fatalities due to the dangerous state of the old walkway.

The Caminito del Rey has now been fully restored at a cost of some €5.5 million and has reopened to the public in 2015 for guided excursions. The route is comprised of 4.8 km of access paths into and from the gorge itself, plus an additional 2.9km of boardwalk / forest trail.

Apart from the spectacular scenery and the path itself, there is a host of natural life to be seen as the gorge is home to flocks of Egyptian vultures, griffon vultures golden eagles and honey buzzards, as well as mountain goats.

Your traverse of the route will be as part of a guided group of 25px max.  Your guide will stop at several points and give a description of the history and construction of the route, as well as pointing out any wildlife of note. The maximum number of people allowed through any one control point on the route is 50 with a maximum of around 1100 per day, so ticket slots are limited and subject to availability.  The walk is a linear one - at the far end you return back by shuttle bus (every 30 mins) to the starting point.
